Political Participation

Women remain a minority in public office at the federal (30% of MA’s U.S. Congressional delegation), state (28.6% of MA legislators), and local (40% of mayors) levels. Since 2019, two additional female mayors were elected, raising the percentage of women mayors in Western Massachusetts from 20% to 40%. At the local level, all but 2 of the 13 city councils or town select boards are majority male.
